I HAVE LOST MY EAR-ECTION

Woof Everyone

This isn't funny. If it's funny to you then you aren't very nice. I have lost my earection. It happened in the desert. One day I had two ears that pointed like destiny towards the sky and then I had one that pointed to the ground like a bloodhounds nose. It was that quick. No adjustment time, no gradual softening of the ear muscles. Nope. It just went FLOP!

Dad thought I had learnt some new trick to look cute while I was begging for food. I admit it looks cute but it's almost the only look I have now. The 'one up one down look'. I can get both down but not both up.

I am a little depressed by it. This is not the time to start listening to sad music or to be picking up a drink. Things could snowball if I let them. You've heard of the Black Dog. Well it happens to blond haired dingoes as well.

I am a little self conscious that other dogs will laugh at me... Hey Spot .. theres that one-eared dingo.

Or worse ... Look at that floppy eared dingo!

I definitely shouldn't start to look back at the old days.

When you have two erect ears who don't think .. 'Uh .. gee I am lucky .. both my ears are as firm as a gondoliers oar' ... No ... you just take it for granted.

Then you wake up one morning and it's gone. BANG. What's that song Dad used to listen to in the sixties:

Don't it always seem to go

That you don't know what you've got til it's gone

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

Well thats how I feel about my right ear. I didn't even know I had an earection until I didn't.

Anyway. It's time like these you have to look at what you have rather than what you've lost. I mean I still have my health, and my Dad, the Kennel that Moves and an erect left ear.

Thanks for not laughing. I mean, if I can't share these sorts of things with you guys then who can I share it with.

woof

Ah Tommie... we are all hostages to time and gravity... it's called ageing! But the good news is we can do it gracefully. My mum was for a time a very successful interior decorator and her advice can be applied to more than decorating - it was this: "when you have a problem, never try to disguise it, ignore it or cover it... make it a feature and everyone will think it fabulous"! And it works... so in your case, go for the 'rakish' angle - think of Picasso in his beret: he was old and getting older but he had a twinkle in his eye (in fact a veritable glint), a beret on his bald head and no woman - of any age - was safe!!!! So take comfort Tommie, cock your head, present the flop as your best feature and go for it. I promise you, no girl will be able to resist. Bon Chance!! Holly/Wooferette x

Tommie, such changes come to us all, as life leaves its shaping mark upon us, in tribute to our exploits and achievements. You have nothing to feel bad about -- any fella who can still sing Joni Mitchell's timeless song as you do here is forever a Stalwart Scout of Springtime! You look VERY dashing with this new jauntiness -- Pixel was noted to be blushing a little over your magnetism.

Don't worry Tommie, it is a sign of wisdom, the wisdom that comes with age. Your tail still wags and stands up nicely. I realise that it was a shock for your ear to lose its earection, but I am sure you will still enjoy lots of eargasms when meeting with other pooches. xx

Woof Willa... Your mum sent me photos of you and I asked him to ask you to please write a story for us. You look a bit like me because you have beautiful eyes that humans love. I don't think yours are QUITE as beautiful of mine but they are very very nice. Dad says you are our first South African dog blogger and we are both very excited. Woof Tommie xx

Woof Tommie! I'm sorry to hear about your current predicament I hope it's not causing you pain. This isn't one of these "ex-con" things is it?? Personally I thing it makes you look way cool!! But seriously lots of things can cause your ear to suddenly become floppy. Things like infections, cuts and bumps, grass seeds, things getting stuck in your ears, nasty biting flies (bott Flies in particular) or perhaps yourpotassium level is a little low. As you know your ears a very delicate and they are filled with very fine veins and nerves and some times when your rubbing or having a scratch things go wrong. But more likely its due to muscle fatigue. Get dad to check and make sure that none of these things have happened and if everythings ok get him to massage your ear several times a day, starting at the base working to the tip. If he complains tell him its therapy.

You are welcome Tommie. When dogs get ear infections and traumas some thing called paresis (weakness) or paralysis (total dysfunction) of the 7th facial nerve. Looking at your beautiful happy photos I am ruling out paralysis because it doesn't seem tohave effected the rest of your face (lips, mouth, nose or eyes). Paresis can effect one or both ears and so long as you don't experience any pain, discomfort or dysfunction you can live an normal happy life with a floppy ear. Some times paresis can be reversed (if the nerve is trapped). Massage will aid circulation to and in your ears. Being a dog of the world you know wild and domestic dogs have used herbs as medicines successfully throughout history. Ask dad to make you a dogerole (thats a hearty meaty casserole for dogs, Podhi loves 'em) and have him include fresh garlic, tumeric, ginger, thyme and rosemary as these can help with inflammation, circulation and muscular problems you may be having. Dad can also sprinkle you potassium, zinc, Vit C/B on your daily portion. Of course if you are experiencing pain, discomfort or dysfunction you need to see your friendly vet to make sure that everything is ok and to check your mineral/vitamin levels are ok. Your vet may want to give you some medicines and thats something you and dad need to decide. I hope this helps. JB

Maybe a little blue pill could correct the problem. :)

Woof Ruthie - Dad explained to me what you meant. I don't know about these things. But I have to say that maybe there comes a time in every dog's life when enough is enough - where things can flop about as they want to. woof woof Tommie.
